9.5What can I say about this album that has not been said before? It is a remarkable blend of soul, funk, pop and jazz, combining sophisticated musicianship with songs that feel deeply personal. From the opening moments, Wonder sounds completely in control. The album moves between intimate ballads and funkier, more rhythmically adventurous tracks. Do you remember hearing “Superstition” for the first time? Could you resist the urge to dance? It's an absolute banger - driven by its unforgettable clavinet riff. Infectious and deliciously happy! What makes Talking Book so impressive, though, is its emotional range. “You’ve Got It Bad Girl” reveal a more vulnerable side, while “I Believe (When I Fall in Love It Will Be Forever)” brings the album to a particularly moving conclusion. It’s one of my favourite moments in music. There is something wonderfully sincere about the song’s belief in love and renewal. The final moments leave the album with a feeling of warmth and hope. More than fifty years later, Talking Book remains one of Stevie Wonder’s defining achievements. It is soulful, inventive, romantic and occasionally explosive, with a remarkable balance between experimentation and unforgettable songwriting.
