D'Angelo builds everything around the pocket, that loose, behind the beat funk sitting right at the center of it all, pulling from Sly Stone and Marvin Gaye without ever sounding like pure homage. Untitled (How Does It Feel) is the obvious centerpiece, intimate and quietly seductive in a way that doesn't need the video to land. The rest of the record moves at its own pace too, patient and organic, jams that stretch out and breathe rather than rushing toward a hook. Feels like a live band caught in a single unbroken exhale, warm and human in a way most R&B from that era wasn't chasing. A defining neo soul record, still without real peers.
