I Built You A Tower

As someone who has never been the big DCFC fan, this record really works for me. It suits Gibbard in a way I haven’t felt about a lot of their music. He really shines across the whole thing.

Death Cab surprises me once again by still making good music nearly 30 years on! At times this album feels too sincere and sweet but then the drums and bass come in and shoot it right down. This band really is more than the sum of all its parts. It wouldn’t be the same if you took out the ethereal guitar, biting drums, throbbing bass or Ben’s angelic voice. Ultimately it is the voice that centers the whole album while the other elements ebb and flow creating one of the most sonically interesting Death Cab albums in years.

Recorded in three weeks with John Congleton, and the speed shows in the best way. There's friction in the playing that hasn't been in a Death Cab record for years: Punching the Flowers lurches on post-punk tension and math-rock angles, Envy the Birds shifts time signatures under acidic guitar and a half-heard slide line, How Heavenly a State turns feedback and a mechanical rhythm section into the album's most aggressive moment. Nick Harmer's bass refuses to sit politely anywhere on the record. The surprise isn't that Ben Gibbard is writing about divorce. It's how often he turns the knife toward himself, circling private cruelties and failures that compounded quietly over years. Trap Door is the finest thing here, a snowflake becoming an avalanche, "if only the winners write history, there'll be nothing on our page" landing like an admission held back for months. By I Built You a Tower (B), the structure he spent the album building has already crumbled. Most bands this deep into a career settle into habit. Death Cab walked back into the room with their younger selves and found fresh bruises waiting.
