Gillian Welch is one of the greatest songwriters of our time, much like how David Rawlings is one of the greatest guitar players. This album is an American tapestry, and it deeply reminds me of Appalachia and the mountains in which I was born. One day, we will all stand at those pearly gates with red clay halos for our heads.

Please, God, somebody roll the windows down.

I drive a 2013 Subaru Crosstrek, and it gets real cold where I live. Last winter, I was up at all hours of the morning driving from the rink and back, and because of the aforementioned vehicle and weather conditions, the Bluetooth in my car would be inconsistent at best. I ended up relying on CDs for music that winter, and this album entered the disc drive in December and didn't leave until March. Cooley, Hood, and Tucker string together vocals and lyrics that are sometimes lonesome, sometimes angry, sometimes mournful, and sometimes descriptive of a middle-aged gay man who just has his own way of livin'. The Truckers can tell a story like no other, and they're stories worth hearing. Grab a bad cup of coffee, go for a drive on a cold winter's morning, and listen to this album front to back. You won't regret it.

Like many things, my affinity for this album comes from my father. He grew up in New York in the 90s, a place and a time defined by A Tribe Called Quest's music. After he introduced me to their stuff, I didn't listen to anything but this album for six months. I could not get enough. The production is funky, creative, and completely unique. The rhymes are precise, lyrical, and eloquent in a way that is yet to be replicated. Everyone should listen to this album. There are few to none like it.

My personal favorite Black Keys record. A rare no-skip album for me. This is my favorite era of their music. The Big Come Up (2002) is good, but a little rough around the edges. Thickfreakness (2003), on the other hand, is just about perfect. Brothers (2010) rounds the aughts out with a favorable mix of their older, more blues inspired style with their newer, more radio-friendly work. In any case, this album fucks. Hard.
