Tracy Chapman — Tracy Chapman 9/10 There are certain albums that teach you something about music. For me, Tracy Chapman’s self-titled debut was one of the first albums that made me really understand and appreciate the power of a complete album. Released in 1988, Tracy Chapman is only 11 songs and about 36 minutes, but it feels like a fully realized statement from beginning to end. Of course, there are the songs everyone knows. “Fast Car” is an all-time great, and “Talkin’ Bout a Revolution” immediately establishes the album’s voice. But what makes the record special is that those songs don’t feel like isolated hits. Across the Lines, Behind the Wall, Baby Can I Hold You, Mountains O’ Things, and the rest all contribute to the same larger experience. There’s very little excess here. The arrangements are often stripped down, putting Chapman’s voice, guitar, lyrics, and storytelling front and center. Even the brief, haunting “Behind the Wall” is powerful precisely because of how little is there. That’s what I appreciate most listening to it now: it isn’t an album built around a couple of great songs. It’s an album where every song has a purpose. And maybe that’s why it hits differently than simply putting on a greatest-hits playlist. You’re not just listening to “Fast Car.” You’re stepping into the world of the entire record. 9/10. One of those albums that helped me understand why the album itself can be an art form—not just a container for individual songs.
