Lost Weekend

It’s brilliant. She is a gift. The product is stunning. The music is melodic and smooth. I do not think I adore it as much as most do but I think it’s only because I’m not as emotionally smart as most. Lyrically I’m just not that deep to fully grasp her balance without someone telling me it’s brilliant and I don’t think that’s a fair way to judge or rate something. I want to feel it and get it at my level.

Sometimes when writing a review I have an urge to share a pun that comes into my head and, as all intrusive thoughts, begs to be released into the wild. But here, here I just have no words. How do you comment somebody's complex, rich and painful experience packed into a 52-minute record and turned into something so... Magical seems a bit of a wrong way to put it, but nothing else describes the power that unleashes the moment you press play. The ability to take your own grief, face it head on and turn it into something as beautiful as this record is exceptional. I am very happy I became Phoebe's fan years ago and I am happy she just keeps proving to me she is one of very very best to do it. Thank you for sharing this with us, I am truly honoured to be trusted with carrying this record forward.

Grief and love tangled together into something restless, sprawling, and impossible to pin down in one listen. Bridgers builds this one out of fragments, jumping around in time rather than telling things straight through, her father's death and a broken engagement circling each other across sixteen tracks. Lost Boys is the clear standout, deceptively upbeat with her catchiest hook yet hiding something more wistful underneath. Still Standing digs into darker family memory, one of the more unguarded moments on the record. Doesn't resolve neatly until the very end, more like flipping through a scrapbook than following a straight line. Her most ambitious record yet, messy in exactly the way it needs to be.

Very atmospheric album. Personal but relatable. Classic Phoebe.

It's difficult to describe how much I love this album

Phoebe and friends return in the biggest way possible! Everyone is saying how depressing this album is, but it actually has some of the most joyful songs in her discography such as “Bobby” and (the first half of) “Never Going Back!”. Even dealing with themes of death there are still signs of light. The songwriting is spectacular and Jack Antonoff brings his special sauce behind the boards. Chris Thile shreds on the Mandolin and Nate Walcott rocks the horns. Even Cameron Winter AKA Son-John Johnson’s guest vocals fit perfectly into Phoebe’s world. Extra points for the Omaha name drop!
