U2 — The Joshua Tree- 7.5/10 Disclaimer: I’m not the biggest U2 fan. Maybe I can blame that on the fact that The Joshua Tree was permanently burned into my brain by Apple’s iPod preload era. 😂 But I gave it a fresh, intentional listen today, and I think I’ve finally figured out how I feel about it. For me, this is almost two completely different albums. The first three songs — “Where the Streets Have No Name,” “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” and “With or Without You” — are outstanding. That opening run is about as strong as an album can get. Massive, atmospheric, emotional, and instantly recognizable without feeling dated. Then… things change. Everything after those first three songs just isn’t really my cup of tea. I understand the importance of the album, the songwriting, the production, and why it’s considered one of the defining records of the ’80s. But personally, I don’t connect with the rest of it in the same way. So my Joshua Tree experience is basically: three phenomenal songs followed by an album I respect a lot more than I enjoy. Still, those first three are so damn good that 7.5/10 feels right.

At first, it may seem hard to choose between Achtung Baby and The Joshua Tree as contenders for the titel of U2's best album, but the presence of 'Bullet The Blue Sky', 'With or Without You' or 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For' makes the choice eventually not that hard after all.

I love U2 to a point. This album was huge. Unless you were there in 1987 and remember waiting to hear the radio premiere of “With Or Without You”, you can’t know the hype and excitement. Is it overrated? Yes. Does it hold up? Mostly. I have too many connections and memories caught up in its grooves. Some I look back on fondly and some embarrass me. That’s about it. War is a better album and Unforgettable Fire is probably best. Or vice versa.

After finally finding their footing on 1984's The Unforgotten Fire, U2 took 3 years to themselves to cook up their next project, and they definitely cooked up yet another banger release with The Joshua Tree. I would argue that the band started moving in a more Contemporary direction with their music as it feels like a much more mature and simple sound compared to the more dreamy and lush direction of The Unforgotten Fire. I don't mind the shift in genres as it does help ground the music a little more, but it also does make it lose its' sauce just a little bit for myself. I think this project is a very safe release for U2 as you can tell they are trying to clock into more of a Pop appeal here, and honestly I like them more when they are stylized and specific rather than appealing to the masses. For the most part I did very much enjoy this album, but those last two tracks, Exit and Mothers of the Disappeared, really left me with a bitter taste in my mouth that I am having quite a bit of trouble flushing out. They are such departures from everything else that was happening on The Joshua Tree that when they come on it feels like an entirely different album for what I could only figure to be no good reason. The Joshua Tree is solid but honestly kind of forgettable if I am being honest, and this is supposed to be one of U2's better projects?
